In 1951, Los Olvidados was a groundbreaking film about street kids in a Mexico City slum. Employing the style of Italian Neorealism with touches of surrealism, director Luis Bunuel, who was named Best Director for Los Olvidados at Cannes, used nonprofessional actors and natural light to tell the tragic story of the young and forgotten. This masterpiece, shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, was “lost” for years. A new 35mm print of Los Olvidados, complete with an alternate ending discovered in 2002, brings Bunuel’s masterpiece back to the big screen.
